Shakedown CruiseIn this period the Slater has single 20mm guns with two on the bridge level and two on the fantail. A range finder is located on the Mk 51 deck. The HF/DF antenna is on the main mast (aft) visible during construction is gone.
U-505 Torpedo Mission
Burmuda - Puerto Rico - Maryland
June 25 - June 29,1944
At this time, the German submarineU-505 was boarded by the USS Pillsbury (DE-133) off the coast off PUERTO RICO and taken into port. On board the sub was a torpedo not known by the U.S. and it was decided to have it taken to the munitions lab at Solomons Island, Maryland. The torpedo was loaded on the Slater's boat deck and taken to Solomon's Island on June 27, 1944.Capture U-505
