The Main Deck starts at the bow jackstaff and the forecastle. Following the anchor gear is the 3 inch / 50 Caliber number one gun. Behind the number one gun is the Mark 10 Hedgehog Projector followed by the enclosed deckhouse. At the forward end of the deckhouse is the Hedgehog Storage (port) and crew shelter with access hatch below decks (starboard). The Officer's Washroom and Officer's Cabins follow, leading to the Officer's Ward Room, or mess and Pantry. An interior passage with access hatches to the Mess Deck and ladder up to the Superstructure then continues past the Galley, muffler room, 20mm ammunition preparation room, into the General Workshop. Various access hatches to the Engine Rooms and storage lockers both inside and out are throughout the area. The passage way aft of the workshop is the Quarter Deck from which announcements were made. Continuing aft is the Engineer's Office, Crew's Washroom, Radio Direction Finder Room, Emergency Radio Room, 40mm Ammunition preparation room, interior hatches and stairs to the aft crew berths on the lower Platform 1 level, ending the enclosed deckhouse. Beyond the deckhouse is the foundation for the number three gun with eight K-Guns or Depth Charge Throwers, four on each side. The Slater has had four of these removed, four remain. On the fantail are two twin 20mm Machinegun positions followed by two Depth Charge "roller" Racks. The Slater has had one removed. You can see both racks on an early picture of the Slater below. Some ships of this class also had two smoke generators between the depth charge racks, these do not exist now on the Slater. You can see these on an early picture of the Slater below. |
