| NAVIGATING BRIDGE (02 Level) | Steering Station |
The "Steering Station" or "Pilot House" is located on the Navigating Bridge or 02 level and is the control center of the Slater. The "Captain's Bridge" is the open area or Flying Bridge above the pilothouse on the 03 level. Orders to the pilothouse were sent by the Officer of the Deck (OOD) or Captain from the Flying Bridge above. In the pilothouse or steering station, the ship was steered by the "helmsman", who kept the ship on course by watching the "gyro compass repeater" (REPEATER COMPASS, Gyro Equipment No 73100, Serial Number 60834, by Arma Corporation). A "magnetic compass" is located in a "binnacle" for use in emergencies (MR 1 Mod 1, by Lionel Corporation, Serial Number 14422). The "Lee Helmsman" sent orders to the engine rooms by means of the mechanical "Engine Order Telegraph" and included an Engine Turn Revolutions panel. There is also a rudder position indicator (Dr No 10-1121 by Henschel Corporation, Amesbury MA). Other equipment located in the pilothouse includes the Clinometer, Radar Indicator PPI Repeater (Model VD2 SN 1443 by Raytheon Mfg. Co.), chart table, control panels for the ship's navigational lights, alarms (Steering Emergency Switch), and communication equipment (speaker, Powered Phone, 3 Sound Powered phones). Approximately fourteen men manned the bridge and pilothouse during normal condition II war cruising. |
SHIP'S AIR HORN Located in the Pilot House was the pull for the Slater's Air Horn located on the stack, this was recorded from the ship's horn. Three blasts signified a collision alarm. Another wave file is this one from "The Gun's of Navarone". At the end of the movie a convoy of ships sound their Steam Collision Sirens at the destruction of the guns. The USS Slater was the Aetos and was one of four Hellanic Naval DEs in the movie. The first ship in line may have been the Slater, and it is its sound captured here. |
